Maritime souvenirs from Vineyard mariners who sailed in the 19th and early 20th century are the subject of the exhibit A Taste for the Exotic — Mementos from Around the Globe. Whether they were chasing whales or shipping goods, the mariners collected items that documented their oceanic travels.

The exhibit opens on Friday, May 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, 59 School street in Edgartown.

The museum will also begin its summer hours this weekend, open seven days a week from May 25 through Oct. 14. These extended hours are made possible thanks to a grant from Cape Air. The museum will also participate in the Blue Star Museum program again this summer. This means free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The historic Cooke House opens for the season beginning June 14.
