One would have never known it was spring when the temperature dipped to the 40s over the weekend, but we will recognize the season more when it reaches the 80s this weekend. The irises are standing tall as if at attention and the catbirds have arrived awaiting handfuls of raisins. I’m still awaiting the arrival of the orioles. Many families have arrived to open their summer residences for the season.

Get well wishes to Ginger Duarte as she undergoes surgery this week at Falmouth Hospital.

Murray and Judith Lerner arrived recently to enjoy their summer season at their home in East Pasture.

All the best to Jim and Nicki Miller as they head to San Diego to begin their new careers and enjoy the sunshine and warmth on a daily basis. They will be greatly missed across the Vineyard. Nicki is the editor of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine and a fellow member of the Vineyard Gazette family, and Jim is the ever-so-diligent grant writer and coordinator for the Tribal Natural Resources Department.

All the best to Deborah deBettencourt Ratcliff as she retires from her elected position as Oak Bluffs town clerk. She is much too young to retire as she was only one year ahead of me at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. We have shared a lot of laughter over the years, as well as our knitting skills, but I am especially grateful for her assistance with my genealogical quests.

Condolences to the family and friends of Shirley Tilton who passed away at her home this past week. Shirley was a multi-generational friend who shared her baking skills with our family on numerous occasions over the years.

Happy 66th anniversary wishes to Av and Dora Morrow, who will arrive soon for their summer at DoraLu Manor.

Happy 20th anniversary wishes to Brian and Elaine Vanderhoop on June 5.

Happy 61st anniversary wishes to Captain Bob and Ernestine Kinnecom on June 7.

Happy birthday wishes this week to June Rosebud Vanderhoop on June 1, Louisa Luening on June 2, and Arthur Battistini on June 3. Maurice Dore (my favorite homeroom teacher), Janette Galbraith, Jason Widdiss, Emily Vanderhoop and Leah Bassett all share the day on June 4. Emmett Cole Taylor will be four years old on June 5 and shares the day with George Baird. On June 6, Hilda Mitchell, Dr. Michael Drew, Griffin Hughes Douglas, Ernie Barrett, Barbara Conroy and Tom Fantasia share the day. Judie Jardin will party on June 7.
