The Aquinnah Public Library and the Friends of Aquinnah Public Library invite you to their book sale on Saturday, August 3 from noon to 4 p.m. Enjoy hot dogs and lemonade while you are buying those books you do not already have in your library. All proceeds benefit the purchase of new equipment and programs for the library.

Have you noticed the newly installed interpretive signs at the cliffs and lighthouse? Thank you to Natural Resources Director Bret Stearns and the Tribal Land Use Committee for finally strategically placing the signs after many years of decision-making.

Speaking of books, the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival will be held this weekend at the Harbor View on Saturday and at the Chilmark Community Center on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5. You will find me there listening to the work of three of my favorites — Rose Styron, Tony Horwitz and Ward Just. Upis Land comedian Lenny Clarke will have the audience roaring at his performance at Flatbread on Sunday evening, August 4 at 9 p.m. His recent performance for One Boston was rather amusing and lightened the mood in Lenny’s true form.

Ellie Beth invites one and all to the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association’s All-Island Art Show on Monday, August 5 at the Tabernacle. To either show or sell your artwork, please go to mvcma.org. A number of Aquinnah artists will have their work on display. Enjoy.

Grace Burton-Sundman, daughter of Betty and John, will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, August 6 at 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Library, sharing her experiences over the past six months of her life and work in the new Rwanda.

Author Linda Fairstein has just returned to her up-Island home from a whirlwind book tour with her latest, Death Angel. She will be at Edgartown Books on Thursday, August 8 at 9 a.m. Enjoy the new cafe while meeting Linda and getting your autographed copy of her latest book.

Aquinnah longtime summer resident Michael Pollan will read from his latest book, Cooked, on Thursday, August 8 at 7 p.m. at the FARM Institute.

Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop recently enjoyed a visit from her brother Bill Bibko of Buffalo who was here for his first visit since 1996. Lisa returned this week from her 35th Syracuse University reunion, having graduated with a degree in environmental sciences and forestry with a focus on wildlife biology. Her 2014 Seadog Calendar is now available across the Island, with all new dogs this year.

Leigh Moreis and his wife, Christy, and their sons. Levi and Isaac. would like everyone to know they have legally changed their name to Vanderhoop and will now be referred to as such.

Condolences to Betty Rawlins and her family and friends in the loss of her husband Keith W. Rawlins Jr., who died in June. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Oak Bluffs on August 10 at 11 a.m.

Captain Buddy Vanderhoop will be one of the featured speakers at the second annual Martha’s Vineyard presentation of The Moth on August 3 at the Tabernacle at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 and may be purchased online at themoth.org. Captain Bud will mesmerize the audience while he tells a tale of his charter fishing experiences, most likely with Professor Charles Ogletree. Mrs. Shirley Mayhew will also be one of the speakers that evening and must also have incredible tales of not only her Vineyard life, but also of her journeys around the world.

All the best to Angela Waldron who sort of retired from her position as community health representative for the Aquinnah Tribe. She was the longest-serving employee, having been there for 26 years. She takes with her many fond memories. She was honored for her dedication and commitment to the community. Angie and I reflected on the work we enjoyed together over 50 years ago at Manning’s. Of course, we were also Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Class of 1964 classmates, riding the Upis Land school bus together each day.

Happy 51st anniversary wishes to Sir Brook and Kristin Zern as they celebrate on August 6.

A very belated happy first birthday to Madelyn Elizabeth Garvin on July 6. Clara Corjulo celebrated her birthday on July 30. Fellow Vineyard Gazette columnist Nancy Gardella will party on August 3 and shares the day with Tom Colligan. Donnie Mitchell, Tricia Bergeron and Jean Tatelbaum share the day on August 4. Pam Morgan Dolby parties on August 5, as will Susan Klein.

A very special birthday wish for Dr. Peter J. Laursen on August 6 (a Chilmark Chocolate day for him). Terry Iadicicco also parties on August 6. Aquinnah Town Clerk Carolyn Feltz will celebrate on August 7, as will David Elliott Vanderhoop II. Beatrice Patadal and Evan Hall share the day on August 8. Layne Bazzy celebrates on August 9.
