Traffic and bus service up-Island will be affected by road closures and re-routing during the president’s visit beginning Saturday. South Road will be closed to through traffic from 2 p.m. Saturday through sometime on August 18. The actual closure is between Meetinghouse and Wooton Basssett Roads. Police and public safety officials are advising Islanders and visitors to allow extra time to reach their destinations and to expect traffic delays at times. The West Tisbury village is not closed to through traffic and businesses are open as usual.
The Vineyard Transit Authority has announced that re-routing will occur on the up-Island route.
Route number five service between the West Tisbury Town Hall and Beetlebung Corner will be suspended. The VTA will divert routes to provide service to Aquinnah via North Road and the Menemsha Crossroad. Timed transfers for routes six, seven and nine will not occur during the road closure.
On the Edgartown to Aquinnah route, the number six bus will depart from Church Street and travel to the West Tisbury town hall as usual. The bus will leave the town hall, travel up State Road past the fairgrounds to North Road and continue on to Chilmark via the Menemsha Crossroad, and then on to Aquinnah via South Road. There will be no pick-ups or drop-offs at the Chilmark Community Center. The scheduled pull-ins at the tribal center will remain the same.
On the Vineyard Haven to Aquinnah route, the number three bus from the Steamship Authority will go directly to Aquinnah via North Road. Old County Road will not be served by this route, but instead will be serviced by route number four for passengers to go to the West Tisbury Town Hall for connections.
From Aquinnah, there will be a departure on the hour from the Gay Head Lighthouse which will travel Lighthouse Road, then on to Edgartown via the West Tisbury town hall.
Another departure from the lighthouse will go directly to Vineyard Haven via North Road and State Road.
For people traveling from the Youth Hostel to Vineyard Haven, take route number six and make a transfer at North Road. This trip is not guaranteed. Youth Hostel riders are encouraged to travel through to Edgartown or the airport for connections.
Late night trips on request will still be honored.
