The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is grateful to Jeffrey White and Eleanor Hubbard for donating the proceeds of the open studio event they held at their house in West Tisbury last weekend. It was to honor Ulla, their rescue cat, on her 20th birthday. Ulla is a calico whose hearing is a bit iffy, but who can still jump up on the bed. Calico cats are long-lived by reputation.
Speaking of calico cats, the shelter has a lovely one looking for a home. At 10 years old, T.C. has a lot of mileage left in her. Michael, the big black tom, is still here as well. This week he has graduated from just appearing from his lair for a quick pat to allowing himself to be picked up and cuddled. His personality is the opposite of Genevive who is a sucker for a volunteer who is willing to spend the afternoon petting her. We have two pretty black and white ladies, Viola and Muffin, looking for lasting laps to sit on.
One dog has come to the shelter. She is a Labrador/Rottweiler mix named Callie. At six months old she is a bundle of puppy energy. She is spayed and microchipped and has been given the necessary shots. The only thing she needs now is a good home and an owner who will train and socialize her — no small task. The shelter has an excellent dog trainer on call. His expertise is available to transform Callie into a well-behaved house dog.
This heartwarming story comes from Samantha Morrill. She saw a struggling seagull in her yard, entwined in fishing line. After unsuccessfully trying to find help for the bird from the authorities who deal with such problems on the Vineyard, 10-year-old Samantha took matters into her own capable small hands. She got some scissors and, talking gently to the bound bird, managed to cut him or her free. A big high five to you, Samantha.
Mickey Mouse is here! Not the Disney version, but a petite brown and white furry mouse housed in a very fancy rainbow cage. He would be a cuddly low maintenance pet.
Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
