A few of the Aquinnah winners at the 152nd Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair include Amos Sauer who won a third prize ribbon for his hand-sculpted wooden boat; Waylon Sauer won first place and blue ribbons for his sculpture of an eagle and a wooden fighter jet, as well as third place for his woven beach grass mat. A beautiful quilt was on display by Alexandra Taylor and Rachel Zack Ishikawa won third place for a beautiful hand-knitted blanket. Kate Taylor won first place for her reversible wampum necklace and a special award for best in show, and Noah Manning won first prize for his bread and butter pickles, as well as his spiced peach jam and his strawberry jam. Noah also won first place for his creative stitchery in junior needlework.

The annual Tisbury firefighters car show will be held on Sept. 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. on Main street in Vineyard Haven. There will also be many sidewalk sales during the car show.

Looking for a Monday evening filled with discussion and laughter? Join in the knitting group at the Up-Island Council on Aging from 7 to 9 p.m. This past week the discussion centered around summer house guests.

Alayna Hutchinson, daughter of Steve and the late Amanda, has started her freshman year studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Ella Madison Mahoney, talented artist and photographer daughter of Michael Mahoney and Julianne Vanderhoop, has left for Manhattan and her freshman year studies at the School of Visual Arts.

Congratulations and all the best to Marc Pitcairn and Allison Kistner who were married on August 23 in an evening ceremony at the Garrison in Garrison, N.Y., overlooking the Hudson River and surrounded by mountains. The Kistner and Pitcairn families celebrated at the Chalet on the Hudson in Cold Spring on Thursday evening. Allison is the daughter of Michael Kistner and his wife Margaret, and daughter of the late Barbara Stone. She is granddaughter of William and Joan Kistner of Pleasant Valley, N.Y. Marc is the son of William and Diane Pitcairn. A grand time was had by all.

Paul, Theresa, Noah and yours truly enjoyed five days in Pleasant Valley with Bill and Joan who sent us on our way to the 168th annual Dutchess County Fair on Sunday. We returned home weary but relaxed after our end of summer getaway amidst family and friends. We had many joyous celebrations including a Kistner family brunch on Saturday in honor of Bill and Joan’s 60th anniversary. Theresa’s siblings arrived from California, North Carolina, and Delaware to join in the festivities.

Coach Jay Schofield will present his memoirs Pearls of Patriotism at the Vineyard Haven Library on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

Story time at the Aquinnah Public Library will be on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Faith Smalley, daughter of Jay and Millicent, returned to her senior year studies at Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield on Tuesday.

Akeakamai Zack Ishikawa, who is spending the month at his Lighthouse Road home, won first prize — a blue ribbon in the handstand contest at Island Gymnastics.
