The weather continues to be in the 60s and 70s, with beautiful calm autumn days. Many people are still swimming at the beaches while dodging day-time derby fishermen. We all wish the weather will hold like this for awhile.

The First Baptist Church will host a pulled pork dinner on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the parish house on William street in Tisbury. Martha’s Vineyard Community Services will have Electronics Disposal Day, sponsored by Bruno’s, on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Time to clear out your basements and garages to recycle air conditioners, cell phones, computers, refrigerators, stoves, televisions, scanners, stereo equipment, copiers, fax machines, dehumidifiers, microwaves, monitors, washers and dryers. Disposal fees range from $1 to $30, with a 10 per cent discount for car loads.
Thank you to Bonnie Chalifoux, Kristina Leslie, and Christy Vanderhoop for their successful Tribal Family Day celebration. More than 100 attended the event, which featured a cookout, games for the children, family tree T-shirts, door prizes, identification of photographs from the 1800s and 1900s, and a life-size family tree with our 1870 census progenitors. Job well done, Human Services Department!

Congratulations to Maxwell Butler who rocked them at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on Sept. 25 as the keyboardist with Patrick Droney and his band. Max will be moving to Los Angeles over the next week.
Ted Leslie retired from Transit Connection Inc., the management team for the Vineyard Transit Authority, at the end of August as the assistant manager. He was honored recently on this momentous occasion, as was long-time employee Jerome Rogers at the P.A. Club — a great evening for all. They will be missed.
Corinna Majno and her husband Ken Kaufman returned to their winter home in California on Tuesday after spending the summer once again assisting in the management of the Totem Pole Inn.
Kathleen Manning of Bridgewater is visiting her parents Karl and Patt Burgess for the week.
Theresa Manning was one of the presenters on a three-person panel at the Underage Drinking Prevention Conference in Taunton on Sept. 26. The conference was sponsored by C. Samuel Sutter, district attorney at the office of the Bristol County District Attorney and supported by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. Theresa, program co-coordinator with the Dukes County Health Council Youth Task Force, presented “How to Mobilize Students, Parents, and Sustain Community Coalitions.” She was accompanied by Tiffany Smalley.
Condolences to the family and friends of Donnie Mitchell who passed away in Boston this past week. His services were held on Monday. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Hilda (Correira), as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. Don was a long-time fishing family friend and schoolmate of our dad’s.
Congratulations to Noli Taylor upon her award from Women Empowered as one of the Vineyard’s “Women of the Year.” Noli is the program director for Island Grown Schools, which provides local ingredients at the Vineyard schools each day. Lee Fierro and Sarah Kuh were recognized for their Island-wide work as well.
Condolences to the family and friends of Frances Tenenbaum who passed away in Cambridge on Sept. 24. She was a favored author and was especially known for her seaside gardening. Her family will be at their Aquinnah home this week.
