Chilmark experienced the first snowfall of the season on Tuesday. Not much of it remains as I write on Tuesday evening but it came down long enough for some to accumulate in dark corners of yards and roadsides. It was just enough to remind us of what winter promises! This was the week in 1946 that Mt. Greylock was the site of the first artificial snowfall! It is now a multimillion dollar global business. It’s all in what you wish for!

The Chilmark Community Church will sponsor a Holiday Flea Market at the Community Center on Dec. 14 and 15. Annette Anthony and Ann Deitrich will organize the event. Present will be some of the vendors who sell at the summer flea markets, and others who wish to set up are asked to contact them by as soon as possible. Ann’s number is 508-645-9506.

The Chilmark Community Church invites us all to the weekly pizza night on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church.

The Chilmark library announces the annual opening of the Offseason Library Cafe. Assorted beverages and cookies are available to the public in the library’s meeting room during regular library hours. We are invited to stop by and enjoy the quiet of the winter day with friends. Thanks to the Friends of the Chilmark Library who sponsor the cafe.

The potluck and music night has been rescheduled and will be at the Chilmark Community Center on Nov. 30 beginning at 6 p.m. We are all invited and asked to bring food to share and our musical instruments to join in the fun. Warren Doty and Alex Karalekas are organizing the popular event.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Menemsha Station, is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Menemsha boathouse, now beginning construction. The event will be on Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m., rain or shine. A number of Chilmark Coast Guard servicemen, past and present, will man the shovels and start things off. The selectmen, Chilmark police, firefighters and other first responders will make up the guest list. There is very limited space at the work site so the public, although welcome, is asked to park elsewhere and be aware of the space restraints. We wish them good weather and a speedy completion to the project.

We send best wishes to Barbara Rivers who is now recovering at home following a fall several weeks ago that required a trip to a Boston hospital and some rehabilitation at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. We hope to see her out and about soon.

The commercial scallop season is underway and the Menemsha Fish Market remains open and ready to sell you some of these tasty fruits of the season.
