A West Tisbury school bus driver has been charged with indecent assault and battery on a child.
Mark A. Bergeron, 47, of Edgartown, was arraigned Nov. 7 on charges of assault and battery, enticing a child under the age of 16, and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14.
According to documents filed in court, Mr. Bergeron allegedly assaulted young girls in West Tisbury in 2009 and 2010. He allegedly knew the mother of one of the girls.
A West Tisbury police report said that Mr. Bergeron was a bus driver for the West Tisbury school, and police notified school principal Donna Lowell-Bettencourt about the charges “to prevent any more possible trauma.”
According to the police report, Vineyard schools superintendent James Weiss notified police in mid-October that Mr. Bergeron was suspended from his job without pay.
Bail was set at $1,000 and Mr. Bergeron was ordered not to have unsupervised contact with anyone under age 16 and the alleged victim and not to work as a bus driver. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for Dec. 2.
