Penny Wong of Grace Church preschool announces the annual Turkey Run on Saturday, Nov. 23. The run starts at Bunch of Grapes on Main Street and continues to Owen Park where all participants will be greeted with water, oranges and medals. Registration cost is $5, all to help this marvelous school. One of the teachers will be running dressed as a turkey. You guess which one.
Bunch of Grapes is hosting many great events. On Sunday, Nov. 17 from 4 to 5 p.m. the West Tisbury library’s semi-annual community poetry reading will be held there. West Tisbury poet laureate Justen Ahren will be the master of ceremonies. All are welcome to attend as a reader or listener or both. Numbers will be drawn from a hat to determine order of readers. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
In other library news, the Vineyard Haven Public Library holds its monthly mini-book sale this Saturday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. Be sure to attend and pick up some holiday gifts because we will not hold a sale in December. The monthly sales will resume in January at a new time, 2 to 4 p.m. And if you have been interested in getting more involved in our library, please attend the Friends of the Library monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 25 from 1 to 2 p.m. We need your ideas and input.
The West Tisbury library is soon on track for its new facility, until then bring your little ones to our library on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m. for Mother Goose on the Loose. All children under age eight must have a grown-up companion.
Speaking of books as I often do, Holly Nadler reports that Susan Wilson’s new book, A Man of His Own, is very exciting. Confidential to Lyn K., let’s get a hold of this one!
I am so thankful and had so many people to thank for my recent experience at Massachusetts General Hospital that I inadvertently omitted these fine folks: chaplain Anneca Philippatis, Linda, Heather, Beverly, Bria and Dr. Bennett from floor two at Wang, Nurse Julie and aides Stacey and Kim, as well as nursing supervisor Kristen on floor 21, not to be confused with nurse Kristin Mondello, also of floor 21, whose name was misspelled in last week’s column. A big hug and thank you to sister columnist June Manning who took the time to visit me, bring me beautiful flowers and fabulous chocolate. Apparently chocolate is considered a cure for anything. Island friends Joao, Gisele and Leide also took the long trip up to visit me and bring great books. I am so lucky to have you all.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Swaran Bahal, Anna Maria Cimeno and Juraci Rodrigues today. Nov.16 is shared by Jo-Ann Walker, JackLynn Parker and Sarah Benson. Nov. 17 is claimed by Tessa Rose Whitaker. Nov. 18 belongs to Katie Lolley, Sarah Thompson, John Alley and Sam Sawyer. Nov. 19 shines on Jenny Coito, Michael Mortell, Linda Voluckas and John Athearn. Nov. 20 is for John Viera and Jonathan Parker. And on Nov. 21, Doug Grant takes the cake.
Many happy returns.
