Well, I don’t even know what to say about the weather. Even the south is now getting this unpredictable weather. All I can say is “Welcome to New England,” and we will see what tomorrow brings.
Happy birthday to all those who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Davi Bulkowsky, who celebrated Jan. 27; Samantha Patnaude and Lucas Reis, Jan. 28; Audrey Polleys, Jan. 29; Michael Kelly, Jan. 30, and to Kathleen Vieira Da Silva who celebrates her day today, Jan. 31.
I said I didn’t know what to write about the weather. Well, I lied. I’m sitting here looking at Facebook and listening to the plows getting the roads ready for the school, which was delayed two hours because of the white stuff. We have seen enough of this winter.
The weather was so warm yesterday that all the snow was melted from the last 10 inches we got last weekend. Now there is a fresh five inches to be dealt with. Many of my friends on Facebook all have comments on the delays and cancellations and we are talking about how when we were young, we never had school cancelled and we walked to school up hills both ways with holes in our shoes. I heard my parents say the same thing when we were young. However, I never had to worry. My dad always had the old “Willy” four-wheel drive all warmed up and ready to go so I wouldn’t miss school. Boy, at times I really did not like that Jeep.
We are in the middle of winter and we all know that we have been homebound or are looking for something to do. Well, I got a call from a friend who invited me to her home along with 10 other women. It was a social night, but also an exchange night. She told me to bring three items from around the house that I was sick of looking at but didn’t know what to do with. She also asked us to bring a dish of finger foods so we could graze as the night went on. So I packed up my three articles and dish and off I went to be among friends I had not seen all winter, and we had a great time. We drew numbers and went into the room with all the articles on the table and picked out something we thought we could use. It was great fun and all of the exchanges were great. Some were real treasures, and of course there were some that were funny. It was a nice way to spend a night and catch up with friends. Did I mention that we did it at 5:30 p.m. and we were all home by 8?
There are lots of things to do at the Edgartown Council on Aging this week. Call them at 508-627-4850 or visit the website edgartowncoa.com. They offer knitting, strength training, the supportive day program, mah jong, and lunch of course.
Felix Neck has winter walks planned — a great way to discover what’s happening in nature on the Island in the off season. You can call them at 508-627-4850. They serve hot drinks in the discovery room after the walks.
The Edgartown library has a couple of activities coming up. On Friday, Jan. 31, there is a drop-in craft project where you can make a pencil or what-not holder from 2 to 4 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 1, from noon to 4 p.m. you can celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse, by being in the dragon parade or take part in the wonton relay race.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning
