Police have charged a Vineyard Haven man with assault and battery in connection with a December Chilmark incident that resulted in a manhunt.

Richard D. Roy, 50, was arraigned Feb. 7 in Edgartown district court on one count of assault and battery. According to a police report, police determined that Mr. Roy was the aggressor in a hunting altercation with another man.

On Dec. 3, the police report said, Mr. Roy was hunting with Steven Carlson when the two men got into an argument about hunting. According to a witness, Mr. Carlson was later walking down State Road when Mr. Roy pulled over in his truck and got out. A shouting match ensued, the report said, and Mr. Roy allegedly shoved Mr. Carlson. Mr. Carlson then allegedly pointed his black powder gun at Mr. Roy. Mr. Carlson told police that the gun could not be shot.

After Mr. Roy called the police, the incident led to a manhunt in Chilmark for Mr. Carlson, with state police helicopters joining the search. Chilmark police were assisted by Aquinnah police, West Tisbury police, state police, environmental police and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) Natural Resources. As a precaution, the Chilmark School briefly went into lockdown. Mr. Carlson later turned himself into police and was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Police later re-interviewed Mr. Roy and determined he was the aggressor, the police report said.

Mr. Roy was released on personal recognizance. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for March 6.
