An increase in high school student enrollment from Oak Bluffs has prompted town officials to consider new ways of calculating the town tax assessment ratio. The selectmen voted this week to send a letter to superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss proposing a system used by districts in Brockton and Acton, which uses enrollment averages instead of yearly data to determine the assessment ratio.

The proposal would use a three-year enrollment average to determine assessment. This year, Oak Bluffs had 22 additional students enroll in the high school.

“The total is the same cumulative, but the change year-to-year is gradual so it would be easier to absorb,” said town financial advisory committee chairman Steve Auerbach. Had the three-year average been in effect for fiscal year 2015, he said the Oak Bluffs share would have been reduced by about $300,000.

Mr. Kiehn said that this year the town assessment ratio was up to 29 per cent.

“It’s a great answer to a frustrating problem,” selectman Gregory Coogan said.

In other business at their meeting Tuesday, selectmen approved dates for Harborfest (June 21), Della Hardman Day (July 26) and Tivoli Day (Sept. 13). They heard a proposal from Phil daRosa for a summer music festival at Waban Park, but asked Mr. daRosa to consider moving the festival to an early fall date.

The board also recognized former director of emergency management Peter Martell for his 38 years of service with the town.
