In Chilmark Squibnocket beach is expected to dominate discussion when voters gather for their annual town meeting tonight. In Tisbury tomorrow night the main theme is spending, with the town facing its first general override in 20 years.
Back-to-back town meetings take place on Monday and Tuesday evenings in the two towns.
The Chilmark meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the town community center, where the selectmen’s planned improvement project at Squibnocket is expected to draw a large crowd.
“I allow everyone to have their say,” longtime moderator Everett Poole told the Gazette last week. “It’s their only chance, once a year.”
The warrant includes questions about herbicides in Squibnocket Pond, a town property line change and an $8.7 million budget, up more than six per cent over last year, largely due to public education costs and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission assessment. The town election is Wednesday.
Tisbury convenes special and annual meetings beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the elementary school gymnasium. Voters are facing a $1.1 million budget deficit due to increased needs across town departments across town departments, including at the Tisbury School, the police department, the department of public works and the regional high school.
Spending requests include $125,000 to install an automated parking fee system at the town park and a laundry list of small capital expenditures for various town improvement projects.
The town election is May 13.
