Fundraisers are underway to help two Island families that were injured in a serious car accident in Virginia on April 27.

Laurel Redington, her husband Ray Whitaker, their daughter Tessa and friend Ellie Hanjian were traveling home from spring vacation early on April 27 when the accident occurred on the interstate near Richmond, Va. Ms. Redington, Mr. Whitaker and Ellie Hanjian, 14, all received injuries and were hospitalized. Ellie was injured critically and was recovering last week, family members said.

Ellie is the daughter of Adam Hanjian and Mary Holmes of Oak Bluffs, sister of Robert Hanjian and granddaughter of Armen and Vicky Hanjian of Vineyard Haven.

According to Niki Patton, donations for both families are being raised at the YouCaring.com website. The fund can be found by entering “Elinor Hanjian” in the “search fundraisers” option. These funds will be divided equally between the two families. As of Wednesday evening, $3,800 had been raised.

You’ve Got a Friend, an Island nonprofit that helps residents through life-changing events, is accepting donations for Ellie Hanjian, who remains in the hospital in Virginia, Ms. Patton said in a press release. Tax-deductible donations can be made by check with “In honor of Elinor Hanjian” in the memo line. The checks can be sent to YGAF, PO Box 1317, West Tisbury, MA 02575.
