Pat Gregory: a loving family man, a peaceful soul, an inspiring educator, a community leader, a generous man, always with his assuring smile. The passing of Pat has touched every corner of the Vineyard, and his life crossed generations. He will be greatly missed by many. Whether Pat was assisting us with our computers at the tribal building, teaching math at the West Tisbury School, attending an event for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where his beloved wife Dorothy was a nurse, coaching our youth in soccer, or just running into him at the grocery store, he was simply a much-admired member of our Vineyard community. His passing has left our community enormously shocked and saddened beyond belief. My sincerest condolences to Dorothy, their children Shannon and Timothy, their grandchildren and their extended families and friends.

Beginning on May 26 and running until August 31, the 1828 Meetinghouse of the Federated Church at 45 South Summer street in Edgartown will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. every day. There is no cost and you do not need an appointment. Hosts will be there to answer questions, and information about the history of the church will be available. Sit in the pews both downstairs and upstairs and imagine what it was like when they held worship services in this special place, which was built 186 years ago. It has changed little since then. A large chandelier hangs overhead with old whale oil lamps from the days of whaling. Frederick Baylies Jr. was the architect of the Meetinghouse, and he later designed the Baptist church on School street and the Old Whaling Church on Main street. Located. For more information, please call Marna at 508-627-4421.
The Martha’s Vineyard League of Women Voters sponsored a discussion on Sunday afternoon at Howes House. Dr. James Weiss and Dr. Peter Palches, present and previous superintendents of the Martha’s Vineyard schools, were the guest speakers. One would never believe that they have had to work under five distinctly different school budgets, policies and procedures, payroll, grant writing and submissions, purchasing, etc. It is probably time that there is just one Martha’s Vineyard school administration. The separate schools may keep their autonomy, but having just one school administration would simplify matters for many. There is way too much redundancy at the present time, which is costing the taxpayers probably a few million dollars from each school over the course of a year or two. For further information and to view the discussion, please go to MVTV.org, on demand for the schedule and the topic. Very enlightening.
A note from a Jillian Saftel: The Save the Gay Head Lighthouse Committee today announced unanimous support from all six Martha’s Vineyard towns to direct Community Preservation Act funds to the move and restoration of the Gay Head Lighthouse, bringing total funds raised to more than $1.2 million of $3 million needed. The voting concluded Tuesday night in Aquinnah, the home of the lighthouse, at the last annual town meeting on the Vineyard this year.
The Gay Head Lighthouse has stood on the western-most tip of Martha’s Vineyard since 1854, but now sits 46 feet from the edge of the cliff due to erosion. The structure is slated to be moved next spring.
In other news, the committee has announced ticket availability to the general public for a July 1 Gay Head Lighthouse benefit concert featuring popular singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash. The concert will be held at the Flatbread Company in Edgartown. Tickets for the concert are available at ticketsMV.com, Alley’s General Store, the Aquinnah town hall and Midnight Farm for $200 in advance or $250 at the door. Doors will open at 8 p.m.
