Whether you go for the food or the dancing or the parade or the games, the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs will have plenty of options for you this weekend as it hosts its annual Feast of the Holy Ghost beginning Saturday, July 19, at 5 p.m. The festivities continue on Sunday begininning at 11:30 a.m. with the parade from the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority terminal to the P.A. Club. The Feast then continues to 5 p.m.
The traditional celebration acknowledges Portuguese Queen Isabella, who tradition says offered up her crown to the Holy Ghost in the 13th century in thanks for saving her famine-stricken people.
Martha’s Vineyard is home to generations of families who share that Portuguese heritage, and the festival is a major fundraiser for the P.A. Club. Now it’s time to order up some fried dough dipped in sugar while you contemplate whether to have the sopa or wait for the fresh lobster to be auctioned off for dinner.
Either way, you can’t lose.
