Welcome to former first lady Hillary Clinton who will arrive this week to sign her latest book, Hard Choices, which I missed by hours at the signing in Chappaqua in June. Oh, well, I am not well enough at this time to be standing in lines for hours as I have in the past to get President Clinton’s book autographed in 2004.
Aquinnah Public Library presents Mad Libs on Tuesdays at 3 p.m., stories and crafts on Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. for younger children, drop-in story reading on Saturdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and Legos on rainy days. Tomorrow will be the ice cream social at 1 p.m.
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will be the recipient of special preview benefit performance by Island Theatre Workshop of Peter Pan on Friday evening, August 15, at the Performing Arts Center. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m., and is directed by Kevin Ryan. Refreshments will be available during intermission. For further information and tickets, please call Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440. Your participation will assist in funding towards the Supportive Day Care, the Medical Taxi program, Emergency Food Program and support groups for families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12 for children under the age of 12. I personally have a block of tickets for children if you are among the first 10 to telephone me at the above number.
Dana Gaines is gearing up for his 52-mile kayak journey around the Island on Saturday to benefit the lighthouse. There will be a finish line party from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Aquinnah Shop. There will be a raw bar, music provided by DJ Kid Pasta and more.
At the Aquinnah Cultural Center this week will be the annual Wampanoag Feast and Fundraiser on Saturday at 5 p.m. Ancient Words in a New Day will be presented on Sunday, August 10, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tobias Vanderhoop, Marge, Jacob and Jesse Bruchac, Trudie Lamb-Richmond, Paula Jennings and Robert Peters will all present, sharing their stories as they relate to history, culture, customs and social norms. There will be a panel discussion at 3:30 p.m.
August 12 is Native American Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as proclaimed by governors over the decades. Your acknowledgment would be greatly appreciated.
The AGHCA annual reception will be held on August 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Aquinnah town hall. It’s free and wine and cheese will be provided; please bring finger foods to share. The focus will be on the saving the Gay Head Lighthouse efforts and activities. Speakers will be the president and director of historic preservation from International Chimney, the company doing the move.
Michael and Eleanor Hebert returned home on Friday from Juneau, Alaska, after traveling with their grandchildren Antone, Jade and Maya.
It was a pleasure meeting the Elghanayan family this week — Jeffrey, Susan and their sons Nicholai, Bryson and Luca. After all, they have only resided less than a quarter of a mile from our home for decades.
Congratulations to Christopher Manning who graduated from his recent classes at the U.S. Naval Base in Pensacola, Fla. He headed to California on Thursday to his new assignment.
Condolences to the family and friends of John Feltz who passed away at the home of his daughter Janice Cournoyer in West Tisbury. He was also survived by his daughter Carolyn Feltz and her husband Jerry Wiener of Aquinnah, and their son Jesse Wiener and his wife Maggie Anderson. He was also survived by his children Leanne Roessler, John Feltz Jr. and Agnes Feltz.
My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Paul Kerns who passed away recently in upstate New York. Paul was a co-worker at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital when he was first starting his career in food service management. He was a pleasure to work with and his sense of humor certainly kept us all laughing.

Lenny and Mallory Butler share the day on August 14. August 15 is a day of celebration for Robert Carroll who has aged gracefully at 90, Vernon Jordan will celebrate as well, as will Kate Taylor.
