What can I say? I still love this weather. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, the breeze is just enough and it is cool enough to stand outside for more than five minutes. It has been just lovely!
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Bethany Felix who celebrated her day August 17; Victor Valentim, August 19; Taylor Fauteux, August 20, and to Anthony Chick who celebrates his day today.
I have a young man, Scott Carter, living with me this summer. He is from England and he is working at the Candy Bazaar.
I am having the best time with him. He is pleasant, he loves my animals and he is a brat. At least that is what I tell him and he tells me his mother says the same thing all the time.
So, he has been busy working as well as I, but we manage to have the same time off once in a while. He has gone to Boston, but on the Vineyard he hasn’t left Edgartown too many times. I did get him to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. So this past Sunday my friend Ellen said she was going out for a ride and wanted to know if I wanted to go, so Scott went with us and we did the grand up-Island tour.
Our first stop was the Bite in Menemsha for fried food (which none of us needed), but it was delicious. Scott does not eat seafood, so in this place that has great fried clams, he had chicken fingers. But we all enjoyed it and off we went on with the tour. He truly loved Menemsha, and he took many pictures. Then off to Aquinnah and the tour of the Cliffs. After five times around to get a parking space, we took the well worthwhile trip to the Cliffs, and of course he wanted to go down to the beach but we told him maybe in September. We then went up to the lighthouse, which was a treat for all of us because we had never been able to that part. It was beautiful and it was nice to get a closer look at the colors. They went up into the lighthouse and they said the view was great, but I was grounded that day and will look forward to the next trip.
The only disappointment of the day was that Chilmark Chocolates is closed until Sept. 4. Scott is here until the 15th, so we still have time to do the lighthouse again and get chocolates.
The annual Evening of Music on the Lagoon will be held at Jim and Pam Butterick’s house at 359 Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs on August 31 at 6 p.m. You can enjoy wine and appetizers at sunset on the Lagoon on the last Sunday of summer, and listen to the fabulous pianist Adele Dreyer play Rhapsody in Blue, to be joined afterwards by musician extraordinaire Peter Boak for duets. Donations of any amount will be accepted for the Federated Church organ/music fund and/or Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard. Please be generous. For questions, email antispung@aol.com.
You can see a little difference in the Island. A lot of the young adults are leaving for the summer to go back to school and some families have to leave for the same reason, in fact there are many schools already in progress. I know they got out of school late in June; a lot of the kids feel the summer went by too fast.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
