Looking to extend your summer into the shoulder season? The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival is collaborating with Ari Lurie, founder of the High Line Festival of Surfing in Mill Valley, Calif., and Alex Karalekas, founder of the potluck jam, for a day and night of free education and entertainment on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Think wind blowing through your hair as you ride the waves. Then around sunset, you gather with friends and family for a little potluck dinner with music. Top that off with a few short films about surfing, and then dance the rest of the night away at an outdoor concert by the Dock Dance Band.

The surf-meets-art event provides a free opportunity to experience surf, music, art, food and film from around the world. The day kicks off with an end-of-season beach party, including free surf lessons with experienced instructors. The party will be followed by the potluck dinner and live music at the Chilmark Community Center.

A series of three short films fresh from the High Line Festival of Surfing will highlight global surfing communities and the importance of ocean conservation. One of the films, The Granite Stoke, is an insightful look into the vibrant surf community of New Hampshire. The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Dylan Ladds. Along with film, food and music, the event also features a surf photography exhibit by Ian Durkin.
