Last weekend the weather was wild. The combination of two northeast storms whacked us. All boats but one were cancelled on Sunday due to the strong wind that reached nearly 60 miles an hour in gusts. We had heavy rain, snow then back to rain. The storms brought down thousands of leaves making it mighty bare, and with the time change the days are  short with a 4:30 p.m. sunset.

The elections are over and so are the endless commercials and robo calls.

The library would like to thank everyone who made the annual Halloween party a huge success. Halloween was real quiet around town. Charlie Kernick and Susan Block report that they had no trick-or-treaters and I had just one.

Today is the start of a holiday weekend for some of us. The post office, school, and all other town and county buildings will be closed on Tuesday in honor of Veterans Day. This holiday was created to acknowledge the armistice that ended World War I. Over 50 years ago the day was rededicated to honor the veterans who fought in all of our country’s armed conflicts. Let us pause for a moment on Tuesday to remember all of those who have gone before us.

Sarah Kuh, director of the Vineyard Health Care Access Program, reports that they will be celebrating their 15th anniversary tomorrow.

Anna Alley of State Road went up to Boston on a business appointment last Friday. She made time to stop and visit our grandsons Robbie and Henry for Halloween and visit with their parents. She found some time to do some shopping before returning on Monday.

Phyllis Meras got a first glimpse last week of her great-great niece, Charlotte Elizabeth Goeckel, who was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Oct. 8, the day she left for Germany. Charlotte Elizabeth is the daughter of Jennifer Reekie Goeckel and Johnathon Goeckel. The baby’s mother is the manager of the Yoga Barn in Chilmark, and her father is a Coast Guardsman at the Menemsha Station. Charlotte is the granddaughter of Chele and Alan Reekie, Hans Peter Goeckel and Judith Pfeiffer of Katama.

Two years ago the selectmen rededicated the veterans’ monument near the flag pole at the town hall. The idea of a monument started back in July of 1949 with the home and community service committee of the Grange. It was selected as their project of the year to purchase and erect an honor roll monument listing the war veterans. Co-chairmen of this work group were Ms. Elizabeth Manter and Mrs. John Sullivan. They raised all of the necessary funds, purchased a monument, including a brass plaque, from Manuel Santos of Edgartown. Maude Call, master of the Grange, dedicated it to all those servicemen on Armistice Day in the triangle opposite Parsonage Pond.

Well, that is all of the social news for this week’s column. If you have any news, please call or email me. As we approach the holiday season, please be reminded of what the late Will Rogers said about making your money last longer: Fold it in half! Have a great week.
