Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Phyllis Vanderhoop who passed away peacefully on Sunday night at her home in Stanardsville, Va. Phiddie, as she was affectionately known by all, was the eldest Aquinnah Tribal Member who was born and raised in Gay Head. She was 99 years old and one of the daughters of the late Chief Harrison Vanderhoop and Celina (Manning). She was widely known for her Phiddie cakes, her own special recipe with more than a little bit of rum added to the ingredients, which was unusual for such a pillar of the church. She was known for her lobster claw head dolls, her beadwork, her pottery that she learned as a child, and for her gift shop at the Cliffs. She is survived by her sister Celina “Jessie” Jourdain of Virginia and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Condolences to the family and friends of Cynthia (Moreis) Vieira, formerly of Tisbury, who passed away at the McCarthy Center in Sandwich on Nov. 13. Cynthia was a family friend of many generations and someone I have known since my toddler days. It was nice to see her this past year at an elders luncheon in Wareham. She was the mother, grandmother and great grandmother of many Aquinnah tribal members. Her services were held in Tisbury on Monday.
Welcome to Ken and Amy who have recently purchased a home in Aquinnah. May they enjoy the beach and may their canines roam freely.
Farewell to Deborah Yennie Moore who has sold her home and is heading to the mountains. She is not sure whether it will be Asheville, N.C. or somewhere in California. For the other 10 residents who have moved from Aquinnah in the past month, not sure where their paths will lead them.
Happy Thanksgiving. Be mindful of those far away from home and not with their families at this time of the year. Remember the Wampanoag Nation.
