Friends of Aquinnah Public Library will have a raffle of a beautiful handmade Advent calendar created by Alexandra Taylor. As I just received the notice rather late, the raffle will be held Saturday at the Aquinnah library. Tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20 and will benefit all the special programs and activities at the library.

Deer season begins on Monday with shotgun season for the next two weeks. There is an eight-pointer roaming around Aquinnah, and let’s see who gets it first. Michael Gilman bagged a rather large one the other day during archery season. Please be sure to dress appropriately with bright orange as there are people walking around with knitted brown hats on their heads or dark coats during their evening walks. Thin the herd — get rid of the ticks! The tribal weigh-in station will be up and running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the work week. Happy hunting.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Herbert F. Slater Jr. who passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 21 after a sudden illness. Herb was someone I have admired since I was a toddler around Menemsha Texaco and Squid Row. He was the beloved husband of Jane Neumann Slater for 50 years, having celebrated their golden anniversary with family and friends in September. Herb was a family friend of six generations of the Manning family. I have spent many enjoyable hours with Herb and Jane over the past few years reminiscing about up-Island history. He will be missed by many in Menemsha. Herb is survived by his wife Jane, their children Caleb Slater and his wife Christine and Sarah Slater Bennett and her husband Aaron, and by their grandchildren Celia Slater, and Jack and Scott Bennett. He is also survived by his brother in law Conrad Neumann and his wife Jane who were constant companions during their summers together. He is also survived by his niece and nephews Jennifer, Christopher and Jonathan Neumann and their families. A graveside service was held on Tuesday morning at Abel’s Hill Cemetery with a gathering at the Chilmark Community Center.

Condolences to Diane Sawyer and her family in the loss of her husband Mike Nichols. It seemed like just yesterday that he attended the filming of The Graduate at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society for the benefit of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. His presence will be missed around the Vineyard.

Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop will have her Vineyard Seadog calendars for sale at the Vineyard Artisans Fair today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury.

Noah Manning and Lily Duarte and their West Tisbury third grade class went to Plimouth Plantation and to tour the Mayflower II one week ago. Their mothers, Theresa Manning and Michelle Duarte, were their chaperones from Aquinnah. The students enjoyed spending time with James Hakenson at Plimouth. James was formerly a resident of Aquinnah and was very informative during their visit.

Happy birthday wishes this week to John Alley on Dec. 3, who shares the day with Nancy Caldwell, Millicent Smalley, Farley Flavin, Durwood Vanderhoop and Vern Welch.
