When making a boxwood wreath, you don’t want just any whipper-snapper at the helm. Experience counts, which is why Ruth Schaffner at age 90 is leading the charge once again at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury annual greens faire this Saturday, Dec. 6.

Ruth has been making wreaths since before, well, never mind how long, but she knows what she is doing, as do the other church ladies (men seem scarce at this event). Each year the church ladies head out into the woods to their secret spots and gather the wild materials to make wreathes and other Christmas decorations. Advance orders are common and there is usually a line out the door when the church opens at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The sale runs to 2:30 p.m., with lunch served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy lobster bisque and hearty chicken and white bean soup with warm chunky rolls, plus warm gingerbread and whipped cream.

In addition to greens, there will be a jewelry table, photography, and numerous gifts to support various mission projects of the church.

The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury is located at 1051 State Road, next to Alley’s General Store.
