A Vineyard designer and businesswoman was presented with the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership’s Pat Gregory award at a ceremony last Friday at the Harbor View Hotel.

Beka El-Deiry is the owner of Island Window Design, an interior decorating business. She was born and raised on the Vineyard and was a student of the late Pat Gregory at the West Tisbury School. After graduating from the regional high school, she attended the New England School of Photography. She returned to the Vineyard in 1998 and began work as an interior designer, opening her own business three years later. She is married with two children. Mr. Gregory had been a mentor to her. The award in his name is the first for the youth leadership institute.

Mr. Gregory, a well-known Vineyard businessman and educator, died in May of 2014, the victim of a homicide while hiking in California.

The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative is an educational nonprofit dedicated to training and nurturing young Islanders to become future leaders. Led by Marianne Larned, the institute sponsors a number of workshops, programs and awards throughout the year.
