Sunny days have been delightful since Daylight Saving Time, or perhaps it just seems that the days have been sunnier since then. There is still a slight chill in the air. The rain and fog this week have really melted most of the four feet of snow that accumulated. The trees are beginning to bud and the crocus are in bloom. Ice floes in the harbors are melting and the seas are much calmer.

Community Baptist Church of Gay Head invites you to the fundraiser this evening at the Aquinnah town hall. Dr. Geoffrey Dana Hicks will perform gospel and jazz at 7 p.m., and invites local musicians to join him following his session. Tickets are $15 per person and will include beverages and dessert. Martha’s Vineyard Museum will feature a decoy carving workshop tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon. Join Chris Murphy and learn the process of carving a duck decoy. Reservations are required by calling 508-627-4441 extension 110 or email rmalik@mvmuseum.org. The cost is $20 per person.

See you at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival this weekend at the Chilmark Community Center and the Chilmark School. There are great films in store for everyone to enjoy. Workshops will be available for children to participate in. The MVFF and Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living are co-sponsoring Hip-Hop-eration on Saturday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m., to be viewed at the Chilmark School.

Islanders Talk Benevolent Fund is sponsoring a Kale Soup Throwdown. Join in the fun on April 19 from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs. There will be a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, and entertainment. Everyone has their own favorite kale soup recipe or one that has been handed down for generations. Let’s see who really makes the best kale soup. You must enter at least a four-gallon pot of soup and be responsible for your own heating equipment to keep it warm. Entrance fee is $10 and applications are due by mailing to Deborah Athearn, P.O. Box 18, West Tisbury.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Daybreak Clubhouse will sponsor a classical piano performance fundraiser with Charles Whitehead on Saturday, March 28, at 4 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church. The fundraiser is for a much-needed screen for computer skills for participants in the program. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and general admission is $15. Congratulations to Josie Iadicicco who has been accepted to New York University. Josie will graduate from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School this year and looks forward to being in New York. She is the daughter of Heath Widdiss and Terry Iadicicco, granddaughter of Donald Widdiss and Nancy Cook as well as Robert and Constance Iadicicco.

Kristina Leslie returned recently from her trip to Los Angeles and to visit her daughters Samantha and Jennifer and especially her grandchildren.

Happy 27th anniversary wishes to Albert and Linda Fischer as they celebrate on Friday.

I’m catching up on birthdays now that my birthday book has resurfaced. March 14 was a day of celebration for Nancy Edwards Thompson, Louise Petersiel and Jay Smalley. March 15 celebrants were Jib Ellis, D.J. Kaeka, Tammy Conroy and Seth Boynton. Rodeo Purves-Langer was eight years old on March 16 and shared the day with Mike Stutz, Natalie Francis, Taylor Ives and John Floros. Gabriel Olsen, son of Chief Jason Olsen and Andrea, was four years old on March 17.

Dan Sauer parties on March 23 and shares the day with Renee Metell, Paul Galbraith, Nanauwe Ama Vanderhoop, and Dwight Kaeka. March 24 is a day of celebration for Rya Baird, Hal Child, Karen VanBrakle and Aretha Witham. Gary Foster parties on March 25, as will Jim Benoit, Emma Mayhew will be eleven, and Eloise Boales. Michael Marshall parties on March 26 and shares the day with Anita Vanderhoop Keegan and Mason Jeffers. On March 27 Brenda Smith Hayden and Lynne Silva will party.
