Well, as you have noticed, the days are getting thankfully longer; we now have more than 12 hours of daylight each day, but the thermometer has not climbed above 50 degrees. In fact, the cold persists and we got an inch of new snow Sunday night. The wind makes it feel much colder. Perhaps the most hopeful sign of spring, which begins Friday, was a young lady going to a local coffee shop with the shortest of skirts and mud boots last weekend!
Last Saturday was Pi Day and I thought it was something you enjoy, but my son Sam set me straight on that. David Peterson and Meghan Bowden made their first trip to the Island and wanted to be married on that date. So we all went to East Chop in a driving rainstorm, and on the top level of the lighthouse they were joined in holy matrimony. They had a wonderful time and promised to come back this summer.
On Monday I went up to visit Nicole, Robbie and Henry in East Taunton. Anna had been there for the weekend and they all went to the flower show in Boston last Sunday. I accompanied her back home on Monday. We all went to the LongHorn Steakhouse for lunch. After a good deal of shopping in New Bedford, we returned home on the 6 p.m. boat.
Mary Jo Joiner reports that Alaska has virtually no snow. She recently returned from a visit to Brooklyn and Washington, D.C. Her son Bryan and Lisa Kingery delivered her first granddaughter, Lila Belle, on Feb. 17. Her other son Grant and his wife Chelsea followed suit on Feb. 20 with her second granddaughter, Marlow Violet.

It’s difficult to believe, but the renovated West Tisbury library opened its doors a year ago. Please join them for a party to celebrate this milestone on Sunday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. There will be music, refreshments, plenty of good company and lots of books. This event is free and open to the public.
Anna Carringer at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum reports that decoy carver Chris Murphy will hold a workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the museum library and you can learn the process of carving a duck decoy. Chris will teach the art of carving decoy heads. All tools and materials will be provided. She reports that the first session was so popular that they have arranged to bring him back. A second session of this two-part workshop will be held on April 11, also from 10 a.m. to noon. Reservations are required, so call 508-627-4441 extension 110.
Doug Pease has released the Holy Week schedule for the First Congregational Church. They will have a traditional Palm Sunday service on March 29 at 10 a.m. On Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. the church will conduct a Tenebrae service. Tenebrae (Latin for “shadows” or “darkness”) is one of the oldest traditions in the Christian church for the commemoration of the passion and death of Jesus. The service will conclude in darkness and silence to remember the story of Jesus’ betrayal, trial and crucifixion. The service is held on Holy or Maundy Thursday and includes communion.
Monday night at the movies at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse is hosted by my nephew Jamie Alley. This Wednesday’s film is The Night Of the Iguana rescheduled from January.
There will be a spring equinox dance party with guest DJ Peter Simon on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Tavern.
