Spring has arrived. Only a little bit of fog and drizzle this week but the sun has actually been rather evident most days. The temperature reached 50 on Tuesday. Those mounds of snow are melting. The buds are appearing everywhere. Oh, that moment we have waited all winter for.

Aquinnah residents Teresa Temple and Alexandra Taylor were participants in the YMCA triathlon on Saturday. Each member of Tess’s team won a prize in the raffle drawing. I was tasked with recording the swimmers in their laps when Sarah and Jessie realized I was not triathlon-qualified (more like get back to cardiac rehab first). I wanted to sponsor a team, but unfortunately an emergency arose and it was not possible for the team to gather. Next year I have it figured out — by possibly winning in my age category as no one else in my age bracket was around. Kudos to my friend Rhoda Diamond, who at age 94, competed in the triathlon.

Sincerest condolences to the family and multitude of friends of Robert J. Carroll who passed away at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Tuesday. Bob was a family friend of many generations. He was probably the last of our lunchtime group from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in the 1980s when he served on the board. Those powerhouse lunches included Peter Williamson, Fred Ferro, Al Brickman, Christopher Look and others along the way — all humanitarians. They were all part of the fabric of our wonderful community. My sister Jyl and I regretfully missed a couple of special luncheons with Bob at his penthouse this past year, but at least I attended his 90th birthday party in August at the Harbor View. Bob had his own vocabulary and one would have to smile the minute he started to speak. He never forgot where he came from, and was the unofficial proud Mayor of Edgartown. Bob was a jewel and will leave an immense void in the community he so loved.

Condolences to the family and friends of Margaret Freydberg. Peggy, as she was affectionately known, passed away at her Stonewall Beach home on March 27. Peggy was a woman of absolute grace and elegance, even when we spent time together when she was 100 years old, one would never have known her age. She was remarkable in her daily activities and very specific about what she wanted and did not want. It was an honor and a pleasure to be with her. She will be missed by many.

Noah James Manning returned home Sunday afternoon after attending a fundraiser for Troy Towne on Nantucket. Troy, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, was once a Vineyard resident and friend of Theresa Kistner Manning, Amy Lilavois, Scott Mullin and many others. More than 1,000 of his friends gathered at the VFW hall on Nantucket for the fundraiser. Theresa and Amy had attended a conference on Nantucket scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Scott flew over on Friday. Paul and Noah joined them on Saturday. It was Noah’s first trip to the other island. He toured the Nantucket Whaling Museum and raised his hand each time the docent asked a question on whales and whaling, walked out to Sankaty Head Light, and met many of Paul’s friends from when he worked on Nantucket as an alarm technician. Needless to say, they all had a grand time.

Jed and Nonie Smith and their sons Clyde, Claus and Clovis recently returned from a trip to Maui. Their travels also included Los Angeles and San Francisco, to shorten the air time. While on Maui, they enjoyed their secluded surroundings, viewed whales and sea turtles, and had lots of beach time.

Happy birthday wishes on April 4 to Rose Styron, Bonnie Chalifoux, Donna Rose, Chris Murphy, Gary Paraboschi, Shelby Ives, Amira Madison, Deborah Mayhew, and Isolette Fernandes. Karen Murphy parties on April 5. Jennie Greene, Dona Mazza and Taza Vercruysse celebrate on April 7. Megan Alley and Cynthia Low share the day on April 8. Beth Kaeka parties on April 9. April 10 will be a day of celebration for Caroline Mayhew, who has recently returned home.
