Amy Fairchild released her first record, She’s Not Herself, in 1994 to rave reviews. She won a Lilith Fair talent competition in 1997, and Dave Marsh, who discovered nearly everyone while writing for Rolling Stone, said of her second record, Mr. Heart, released in 2002: “If there still was a recording industry, this would come out on a major label and would be such a big hit you’d be sick of her by now. Not many people make records this good.” And then she went kind of quiet. Over 12 years of quiet, at least in terms of records. Last year she returned to the scene with a new release titled Amy Fairchild. Barbara Dacey at WMVY was immediately hooked.

“I listened to her record and just said, wow,” Ms. Dacey recalled. But Ms. Dacey didn’t stop there. She decided Amy Fairchild would be the perfect musician to headline a benefit concert for the Friends of mvyradio and the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse. The concert will take place on Friday, May 1, at the downstairs performance space at the playhouse.

“MJ [Bruder-Munafo] and I have been talking about doing this for awhile,” Ms. Dacey said about the collaboration. “And it’s been great to see how the downstairs space [at the playhouse] has evolved.” This winter the playhouse has hosted coffeehouses, cabaret nights and poetry readings at the intimate space.

“It has been absorbing the performances and then giving the energy back,” Ms. Dacey said.

Tickets prices for the concert are being set purposely low at $12. “We wanted to be able to introduce as many people as we can to Amy,” Ms. Dacey said.

The Fruit Flies, a duo of local musicians made up of Charlotte Benjamin and Eli Berlow, will open the show.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m., with tickets only available at the door.
