Friday is the first of May when baskets may be hung on your door and Maypole celebrations and dances, once considered a ritual but now largely forgotten, announce the arrival of warmer weather. Katherine Long reports that her peas, glorious peas, are coming up! The baseball field on Sunday hosted a game and the tennis courts were also busy. Short-sleeved shirts and shorts were the clothing of choice. Cinco de Mayo, a celebration commemorating the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, is on Tuesday.

David McCullough has not been seen on Music street very much in the last year and has been missed by his many friends. Perhaps it is because he has written a new book, The Wright Brothers, that has a release date of Tuesday. I have ordered my copy from Amazon as they reminded me I have bought books by that author before. This is no doubt destined to be another best seller.

Lynne and Allen Whiting of State Road have recently returned from a trip to Arizona and Utah, visiting friends and family. While in Tucson, they reminisced over dinner with Mary Goethals and her husband Charles Poster. They enjoyed museums and art galleries in Tucson, as well as in Wickenburg. In Salt Lake City, they celebrated Lynne’s 66th birthday along with her grandnephew Oliver McGuinn’s first birthday. Angie Grant, VTA administrator, reports that the VTA bus schedule will be gradually changing to the summer shoulder season beginning Saturday morning. At this time, it will offer extended service on Fridays and Saturdays until Memorial Day weekend when it will include Sundays. The passenger count increased in the last three months of the winter schedule despite the endless snowstorms. The new schedules are available and contain a wide range of regional transit information and a system map and are available at most businesses in town.

History note: On May 12, 1964 the Grange held an evening of entertainment, broken only by a short business meeting, and they turned the Agricultural Hall into a café. The program was arranged by Mr. and Mrs. William McClure and Muriel Fisher. Edward Silvia served as master of ceremonies for the floor show, which included numbers by Mrs. McClure on the chord organ, Dale McClure on the accordion and Frank Brown on the piano. Donald and Peter Fisher and Dale McClure presented a skit for the group. Miss Carol McGee performed a Mexican-style modern dance, and George Hill showed his skill on the drums and also as a comedian with his imitation of Frankie Fontaine. Miss Cathy Convery and William Luce performed several folk songs and the evening’s entertainment included a sing-along and ended with dancing.
