A four-week-old investigation into an alleged sexual assault in the State Forest remains open and unsolved, Edgartown police said in a press release this week.

“Officers assigned to the case have worked closely with the victim and have investigated numerous leads,” the release said. “A number of individuals who resemble the description provided by the victim have been identified and ruled out as potential suspects.”

The assault was reported on April 2; a 58-year-old woman told police she was walking her dogs on the southeast side of the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest on a trail near the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School when she was sexually assaulted by an unknown male who had a knife. The alleged victim provided police with a very detailed description of the attacker. Despite that, police said later that they would not be releasing a composite sketch of the suspect, for reasons they could not divulge to protect the privacy of the victim

In the updated release this week, police said one aspect of the description of the suspect had changed.“The victim reported that the hand tattoo may have been what she described as a ‘grease smudge’ and not an actual tattoo,” the release said, adding: “Discrepancies in a traumatized survivor’s account of an incident are normal, but obviously further complicate these types of investigations.”

Police continue to seek information from the public. The department can be contacted by phone at (508) 627-4343, by email at crimetips@edgartown-ma.us, or by text message at 774-310-1190.
