Spring has finally arrived, with temperatures in the 60s this week and the return of many from off-Island. The birds have returned and have joined in chorus with the pinkletinks.

Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Minnesingers will present their annual spring concert this weekend. Jan Wightman, MVRHS music director, and her husband John of Aquinnah returned a week ago after chaperoning the students on their recent tour of Spain. Thank you to Delilah Meegan, daughter of Emily and Bill, for her personal invitation to the concert. Delilah was most enthusiastic about her travel abroad and the learning experience of it all.

Santander Bank at Beetlebung Corner will host a final art show/farewell party on Friday, May 15, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services in conjunction with Bruno’s will hold Electronics Disposal Day on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the MVCS campus. Clean out your attics, garages, basements and recycle old appliances, computers, televisions and microwaves. The price list is posted on the MVCS website. There’s a discount for a truckload of recyclables. It benefits the many programs providing services for more than 6,000 Islanders throughout the year.

The YMCA in collaboration with the MV Youth Task Force and many from the Vineyard business community will sponsor the second annual After Prom Party at the YMCA. Donations are still needed for food, prizes and decorations as well as gift certificates that would appeal to 17-year-olds.

Condolences to the family and friends of Lillian (Gonsalves) Garvin who passed away this week at the home of her daughter. Lillian was the widow of Ernest Garvin, and was the eldest of 12 children in her family, the daughter of Jerome Gonsalves and Maude (Haskins). She was an elder of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). She is survived by her daughters Marcia Buckley and Yvonne Michelson of Oak Bluffs, and Linda Scott of Aquinnah, and her sons Ernest Garvin of Texas and Stephen Garvin of Oak Bluffs and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Frank, Dennis and Jerome Gonsalves and her sisters Sybil Moreis, Audrey Moreis and Sandra Porrata. Services were held on Monday in Oak Bluffs.

David Goodnight returned to his home in Kentucky on Sunday after spending the week with his daughter Kylee Rose and her mother Kayla Manning and to attend the first birthday party for Kylee. Kylee enjoyed her day with family and friends, many beautiful gifts, and delicious luncheon. David observed his birthday on April 28 while visiting Aquinnah and enjoyed a family dinner at the Ocean View before his departure.

Congratulations to my friend Kenneth Ivory who is observing his 40th year of work at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Ken is now up to working on a seven-day schedule! The only two employees who supersede Ken would be Marcia Valentzas and Cathy Twadelle.

Zachary Smalley has ventured off to New England School of Technology in Warwick, R.I., where he will study welding.

Capt. Hugh Taylor and his wife Jeanne have returned from their winter sojourn in the Caribbean. They are already preparing to open their Outermost Inn for the season and to get the bike ferry up and running soon.

Maysel Vanderhoop enjoyed her 5th birthday with a party on May 2 with family and friends and her siblings Brian, Novella and Carl.

Happy 43rd anniversary wishes to Mike and Pam Dolby on May 6.

Happy 16th anniversary to Darren and Nancy Leport on May 15.

Happy birthday wishes this week to James Wallen on May 2. Betsy VanLandingham celebrated a milestone on May 3 and shared the day with Av Morrow who also observed a major milestone, and Jack Runyan who celebrated his fourth birthday. Jonathan Zack partied on May 4 and shared the day with Kaya Rutkowski who turned five. Karen Duffy celebrated her special day on May 5. Alexandra Taylor observed a major milestone and in celebration had planned on running to work in West Tisbury, probably a 15-mile jaunt, but we know she can do it. Caleb Caldwell observed his special day on May 7.

Paul Cotton will observe a major milestone on May 10 and shares the day with Lenny Polucci who plans to visit Aquinnah soon, and Cookie Gazaille Perry and Bonnie Ciancio.

A very special happy 100th birthday wish to longtime friend Eileen Mayhew who will observe her special day on May 11.
