The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School varsity girls’ tennis team’s stellar 7-0 record will be tested on its home turf at 3 p.m. this afternoon when it faces Barnstable for the second time this season.

The Vineyard girls have pummeled their competition all season long. Coach Nina Bramhall reports that the team has won at all five positions in every match but one.

Thursday’s matchup against Barnstable merits considerable attention. The Vineyard girls defeated Barnstable in the first match of the season, marking the first time Martha’s Vineyard defeated Barnstable in as long as anyone could remember. Barnstable hadn’t lost its season opener in a decade, according to Coach Bramhall.

Barnstable has not traditionally been a rival of Martha’s Vineyard, as they are a Division I team and arguably the best team on the Cape. Martha’s Vineyard is a Division III team.

“We’re excited and nervous because they will come back with guns blaring to set the record straight, but we want to hold our ground,” said Coach Bramhall. “It will be a very exciting match.”
