Please Adopt Us Kitten season has begun at the animal shelter. One black and one tiger male and three tiger females arrived. They are seven weeks old and are awaiting the vet to check them out. The list of people who have signed up to adopt one of these little tykes runs to two pages. We expect this litter to go to forever homes fast. However, we expect another group shortly. The best way to get your own paws on one of these babies is to come to the shelter and put your name on the sign-up sheet at the front desk. The shelter is still housing two beautiful adult cats who need homes. Both are tuxedos: one short-haired male, Mickey, and one long-haired female, Logo.

A dear little Chihuahua is sitting in the lobby with her new owner as this column is being written. Tallulah is her name. She was surrendered due to the death of her previous owner. She only spent one night at the shelter before she was claimed by a nice lady who fell head over heels for her. To say they are mad about each other is an understatement. One of the satisfactions of working at the shelter is seeing the joy a perfect match brings to both the adopter and the adoptee.

On June 6 various pet related events will take place. The annual Celebration of Pets will be held at the Harbor View Hotel from 10 to 11 a.m. Bring your animal by if you wish it to be officially blessed by a clergyman. It can’t hurt. That evening the animal shelter is hosting a forum on how to pick a puppy. From 6 to 8 p.m., a groomer, a breeder, a trainer and our own Lisa Hayes will speak about the ins and outs of choosing and raising a new canine family member. All that for a $10 donation to the shelter.

The invitations for the garden party are out. It is being held on Monday, June 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. Besides the auctions, both silent and live, there will be a jewelry sale. Used costume and “real” jewelry will be sold for the benefit of the shelter. Even if the stones have lost their sparkle or the chain is missing a clasp we can repair it and put it up for sale. So rummage through your boxes and safes and donate a bauble or two for the benefit of the animals. Call the shelter for an invitation to this glamorous event if yours has not arrived.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown, MA 02539 or visit animalshelterofmv.org.
