Chilmark enjoyed a spectacular Memorial Day. The events of respect and memory were blessed with sunshine and attendance and the family reunions were many. The Chilmark school students continued a long tradition of casting flowers in Menemsha harbor in honor of those lost in wars.

Chilmark Church’s annual blessing of the fleet was held in brisk winds but was a moving event. As always we thank and honor our veterans publicly and wish peace for all of us.

We are happy to report the reunion of two old friends as the Rev. John Taylor came for a visit with Bette Carroll. John is a past minister of the Chilmark Community Church and made many friends here who always enjoy his visits.

The harbor was a busy place with some yachts in port and many sightseers longing to be reminded of summer. All the businesses were open and food was available.

Tom Dresser will present the Wednesday evening program on June 3 at the Chilmark library. He will tell us about his new book entitled Martha’s Vineyard: A History. The talk begins at 5 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge; books will be available for purchase.

Lis Gude and Michael Drezner enjoyed a visit with Liz’s son Clay Scoble, his wife Laura and their son, Finley, all of Somerville.

Bob and Emma Shalhope are at their home on D.H.’s Hill in Menemsha for the upcoming seasons. They winter in Norman, Okla.

Cathy Thompson-Wood entertained her college roommate of some time ago. Anno Ballard came from Portland, Ore. for a catch-up visit.

The Lazarus family gathered for the traditional opening of the family home on Middle Road. Richard Lazarus and his wife, Jeannette Austin, came from Cambridge; Suellen and Billy Lazarus were here from Washington, D.C., and Twiggy Lazarus and her husband Daniel Jay came from St. Louis for the reunion.

Ed Greenebaum and Joan Caulton are at their Menemsha home for a month’s visit. They live in Bloomington, Ind. when not here.

Ann Baker is at the family home at Spring Point for her annual clean-up of the gardens. She currently resides in France and will be returning soon.

Peter and Sally Cook were at the Scott house on South Road to share the holiday with their Chilmark family.

There will be a funeral service for Daniel L. Mayhew and his wife Ethel Judith on May 30 at 1 p.m. at the Chilmark cemetery on Abel’s Hill.

The seventh annual Windemere Auction to benefit the Recreation Department will take place 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury on Friday, June 12. Admission is free. Refreshments, wine and sweets will be available. For more information please call 508-862-1933.

The Chilmark library invites us to an ice cream social and community sing with Roberta Kirn at the library on Saturday, June 6 at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge. A nice chance to catch up with busy neighbors and enjoy a treat. Please call 508-645-3360 if you have questions.

The Sustainable Book Club is meeting at the Chilmark library on Wednesday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m. The book to be discussed is The World is Blue by Sylvia A. Earle. Coco, a three-month-old chocolate Labrador, has joined the ranks at Station Menemsha and the rest of the U.S. Coast Guard crew. He continues a long tradition of labs at that station and we look forward to meeting him.

The sandhill Crane that has been vacationing at the Capt. Flanders house has attracted a lot of attention. I have not spotted it but many others have. The great white egrets are back in Chilmark too. Maybe warm weather is due soon!
