A day on the golf course that benefits children? Sounds like a hole in one. Island golfers came out to Farm Neck last weekend for the 21st annual Children’s Benefit Golf Tournament, a major fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands.
Competing for the prize of having their names engraved on the Joseph Robichau Winners Trophy, 115 golfers broken into 23 teams took part in the annual tournament. With a score of 55.6, first place honors went to the team of Jay Morton, Chris Delaney, Randy Tavilla, Henry Smith, and Mark Hess. The second place team of Jim Kaplan, Bob Jaffe, Frank DiDomenico, Ralf Pirozzi, and Al Johnson came in close behind with a score of 55.7. Howard Miller, Doug Sederholm, Frank Wezniak, Dee Lander, and Joe Grillo came in third with 56.6.
Each team had five players, including some sponsored golfers from the regional high school golf team, the Boys & Girls Club said in a press release.
One young player, Nick Fiore, received the A. Donald McGrath Youngest Golfer Award, an annual award given in honor of the late Don McGrath, who long served as the event chairman. Mr. McGrath started
the tradition of including youth players in the tournament. Golf was followed by lunch, contests, and raffle prizes. The tournament raises almost $35,000 every year. “We are beyond grateful to the board and staff at Farm Neck who truly make this a first class event,” Boys & Girls Club executive director Peter Lambos said in the release. “To be able to come in and take over their club for the entire day is an unbelievable gift to the Island’s kids.”
Morton Financial, Martha’s Vineyard Insurance Agency, The Edgartown National Back, and Vineyard Vines were the major supporters of the tournament this year.
