At last, summer has arrived. There have been spectacular surprises with the sunrise and sunset times over the past week. The roses are in bloom across the Vineyard, draped neatly across fences or on trellises. Their fragrance is wafting through the air and let us hope the winds of Tuesday were not too significant. The VTA summer bus schedule begins Saturday. Vineyard schools end the school year on Monday after experiencing all of those snow days over the winter.

Penn Field in Oak Bluffs was officially dedicated on Saturday after a lot of work, but well worth the wait. The field will been enjoyed by many families during the Martha’s Vineyard Little League season. The AA minor league Dodgers won both games on Saturday and returned on Tuesday evening for an end of the season barbecue. Thank you to coach Ernie Chaves and his many assistants for a successful year. It was unanimously voted to have Ernie as their coach again next year—no matter which team the players are picked to play on!

Christopher Fischer will present his new book, The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook, at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore on June 28 at 4 p.m. Chris will be assisted by Remy Tumin, one of his marketing managers.

Speaking of Remy, every time I see one of her articles in the Vineyard Gazette or the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine, I call the office to see if she has officially returned, only to be told she is freelancing. Well the best wishes often come true while anticipating seeing Remy once again. Jane Slater and I were delighted to see Remy in Menemsha on Monday. She was accompanied by her mother Margaret and by her aunt Deb. Deb had been a resident of Aquinnah a few years ago and resided just two driveways down the road. We have all resided in Pleasantville, N.Y. and had a few moments to reminisce about our lives there. Of course they are all much younger than I and were in grammar school while I was at Pleasantville Junior High.

Welcome to William Corbo of Kauai, who was born in February and is now making his Vineyard debut accompanied by his parents Joseph Corbo Jr. and Andrea of Quebec. Charles Joseph Housiaux, son of Erin Corbo and her husband Charles of Miami, are all descending on the Corbos’ for the last weekend in June. Daughter Nicole Corbo, of stand-up paddle fame, and her partner Adrian, Island designer who hails from Calgary, will also be on hand! Of course, Joseph Corbo Sr. and Faith are ecstatic to have their children and especially their two grandsons all together for a visit at the same time.

Noah James Manning celebrated his ninth birthday with family and friends at The Barn where they enjoyed bowling followed by a picnic in Hiawatha Park and a game of basketball, and then off to the new Penn Field for the last two games of the season for the Dodgers AA Little League team.

Condolences to the family and friends of Lynne Susan Roberts, who passed away at her home in Vineyard Haven on June 12. Lynne was a former co-worker at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where we worked together in the medical records department at one time. She was the daughter of the late Irving and Miriam (Leibovitz) Roberts. She is survived by her son Nicholas Klingensmith as well as by her siblings. A memorial service will be held on July 2 at 7 p.m. at the Little Bridge on the Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach in Oak Bluffs. Please bring a single flower to commemorate her life.

Jessica Shafer and her daughter Isabelle Lumb have arrived from Florida for their summer sojourn at their home in East Pasture. Isabelle will enter Boston College in the fall as a freshman.

Congratulations and all the best to Dr. James Weiss upon his retirement on Monday. Thank you to Dr. Weiss for spending the final 10 years of his career in education with the Martha’s Vineyard students and their families as well as the community as the superintendent of schools. Enjoy retirement!

Happy 34th anniversary wishes to Barry and Dorothy Sullivan on June 27.
