Both music and wine flowed generously at Featherstone’s campus last Friday night for the opening of the opera Impresario Now! and the gala dinner honoring Judy Belushi Pisano.
The opera was an adaptation of a work by Mozart done by Wendy Taucher. The company performed shows on both Saturday and Sunday nights as well. Costumes were designed by Stina Sayre.
The opera featured original compositions alongside original classics by Mozart. The piece is an English language adaptation of his original work “Der Schauspieldirecktor.”
“I was going to do it as a play, but once you start reading the text it’s not interesting,” explained Ms. Taucher. “So that’s how I got the idea of dropping in Mozart’s greatest hits.”
After its run in Martha’s Vineyard, the opera is moving on to performances in Falmouth, Nantucket and eventually New York. The opera puts a modern twist on the Mozart’s work, with composer Swifty Frank placing this performance amidst a crowd of prima donnas and wannabe celebrities.
“The trouble with opera is too much singing!” shouts the composer in frustration at one point.
But for the audience present, the amount of singing appeared to be just right as the performance tent was consistently filled with raucous laughter and applause.
Following the performance, attendees were treated to a gala dinner celebrating Judy Belushi Pisano. Actors joined the festivities, mingling with the crowd who complemented them on what they remarked must have been a physically draining performance.
“It made me ready for dinner just watching it,” said one woman as she hurried to the buffet table.
