Rod Backus of Vineyard Haven took home the top championship at the all-Island Chappy Pong table tennis tournament Saturday.

August Michels, 10, defeated Phil Lieberman to win first place in novice division.

Mr. Backus earned first place in the elite division after a hard-fought final match against Alina Wen of Edgartown. Both finalists are members of the Martha’s Vineyard Table Tennis Club, which sponsored the tournament along with the Chappy Community Center.

Wen came back from a two-match deficit to outscore Backus 3-2 and force a second final match. Backus went on to win 3-0 and take first place.

In the novice division, August Michels, 10, defeated Phil Lieberman to win first place.
