With September comes the wind. The Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival guarantees it, and they should know, having been in the wind business since 1967.

The event began as a kite festival and remained so for 20 years at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs. There were prizes for highest kite, biggest kite, longest flyer, prettiest, ugliest and even the most damaged — often the most crowded category.

But then, well, the breezes stopped blowing, and for nearly 25 years when one walked through the park there were only clouds or blue sky to be seen up high. Or maybe, if lucky, there would be a small child and parent out there flying a solitary kite, but witnessing the magic of it by themselves.

Finally, Holly Alaimo and Joan Hewson said no more, the wind is still there, so why not the crowds and community too. And behold, in 2011 the Wind Festival returned, but this time not limited to just kites. Now, all manner of flying things, from frisbees to sail boats (okay, they don’t fly, but they use wind to move) are part of the action.

The festival runs from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Ocean Park. You can even make your own kite if you don’t have one handy.
