Sengekontacket Pond is closed to shellfishing after the heavy rainfall on Thursday, Sept. 10.

According to the town of Oak Bluffs, which announced the closure on its website, the pond is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the earliest.

Red fly flags at both of the bridges on the pond when shellfishing is prohibited.

The state mandates that saltwater ponds are closed to shellfishing after heavy rainfall as a precaution against pollutants that can be washed into the pond from roads and other sources, like waterfowl.

Oak Bluffs Harbor is also closed to shellfishing. All of Lagoon Pond is open.
