It is the Age of Iron once again on the Vineyard. That’s right, we are going back in time, to the days of yore when ore ruled and those who knew how to forge rocked. Behold your inner Blacksmith and embrace her. It is time once again for Iron on the Island, and everyone is invited. It will be hot. How hot? Molten hot, baby.

The event takes place at Featherstone Center for the Arts on Saturday, Sept. 26, from noon to 9 p.m. To prepare, the folks at Featherstone have gathered a veritable mountain of debris — old sinks, bathtubs, radiators; the list is long and weird. The mountain will then be fed into a roaring furnace until a temperature of 2,650 F is reached. And you thought August was hot.

The furnace then gets tapped and 120 pounds of molten iron comes pouring out into a handmade ladle, which is then distributed to various molds, which you have created. Every 10 minutes another 120 pounds of liquid metal gets poured. See this in the dark and a sunset is suddenly second best.

The weekend runs this way: on Saturday carve and scratch your own mold from noon to 4 p.m., the furnace fires up at 4 p.m., then watch your work get poured from 6 to 9 p.m. On Sunday pick up your artwork from 1 to 4 p.m.

Crew members and iron artists will be available for consult and comfort from the heat. All ages are welcome, but children should be accompanied by a worried adult.
