The weekend weather was delightful. A smattering of pumpkins, mums and Halloween displays are beginning to appear around town. We now have an early sunset (6:20 p.m.), cooler temperatures and memories of a September that seem to have slipped by. On some vines and trees the leaves have begun to turn. But not until after Halloween will we really see some fine fall color on the leaves.

Roger Williams can be heard in a distance singing his classic, Autumn Leaves.

Congratulations to Leon and Brenda Brathwaite, of Vineyard Meadow Farms, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary off-Island with family and friends.

Charlie Kernick reports that it was a busy month at Post Office Corner. Connie and Jim Sessoms of Hillsborough, N.C. along with their daughter Sarah and her friend Jordan, were here for what has become their traditional week on the Vineyard. Lobster, grilled littleneck clams, chowder and Morning Glory sweet corn were incorporated into just about every meal at their request. Previously, the new owners of my wife’s former business in Morrisville, N.C. came to visit. Linda and Clint Owens had never been to the Vineyard before, and they vowed to return on a regular basis.

Deb Morelli has just returned from visiting her son Jamie and daughter in law Alisha in Atlanta, Ga. She went down to help celebrate her grandson Carter’s first birthday. According to Grandma, he is adorable and she is mighty proud of him.

Linda Alley, the jelly queen, reports that next week will be the last Farmers’ Market of the season at the Grange Hall. Soon the winter farmers market begins at the Agricultural Hall. She wants to thank all the customers for making this year’s market a great success.

The feeling around town is that Ric Burns and his wife Bonnie Lafave, of New York city, who purchased the old Parsonage Farm from Daniel and Tara Whiting, will be a perfect fit for this historic place. The old house was originally constructed in 1667 and added onto many times before the Civil War. It had been owned by the Whiting family for over 160 years. Crews have been hard at work for the past few weeks beginning the restoration process.
