A section of North Road was closed most of Thursday afternoon, after a trailer truck struck an overhanging tree, West Tisbury police said.

The accident happened abut 1:30 p.m.

The tractor trailer rig loaded with hay, traveled some distance after striking the large overhanging limb, when the trailer bed buckled, spilling hay bales onto the roadway. The truck came to rest in West Tisbury, about 100 feet from the town border with Chilmark.

Police said no one was hurt, and while an investigation is still under way, it is not likely the driver will be cited.

The truck was too damaged to tow away, so a steel beam was brought in to shore up the trailer bed. That operation took much of the afternoon.

At about 5:30 p.m., the truck was towed away, and police reopened North Road to traffic.
