Got family photos? Time to share them to help create a portrait of the Vineyard community. Mass. Memories Road Show, a public history project that is digitizing family photos and memories from across the state, will be on the Island this Sunday.

The road show will host a free program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven. The program is a joint project of all the Island public libraries.

People are invited to bring up to three family photos, which will be scanned and included in a digital archive. Contributors can also choose to share stories behind the photos in a short video or have a keepsake photo taken. Professional archivists and historians will be available to give advice about dating and caring for family photos.

So get out the photo albums and look for some favorite shots. The photos can be old or new, formal or informal — they should be important to you or representative of yourself, your family or your connection to the Vineyard. The photos can also be in any format, from prints to digital shots on a disc, thumbdrive, or a cell phone. After the images are scanned you will receive the original image back. For examples of photos brought to past events, visit openarchives.umb.edu.

Participating in the community road show event usually takes about a half an hour. While having pictures scanned doesn’t take that long, there will be time to complete paperwork and look at other photos.
