An Edgartown man is facing charges for the alleged theft of three vehicles in the last two weeks, police said Tuesday.

Oak Bluffs police said in a press release that Jacob M. Murphy, 26, will be charged with three counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, three counts of vandalism, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident. He is scheduled for arraignment in Edgartown district court on Friday.

Police said Mr. Murphy was arrested last Friday on matters unrelated to the stolen vehicles. Later, police examined surveillance video of a vehicle stolen Oct. 22 from Ocean avenue in Oak Bluffs. The vehicle was abandoned in the Edgartown Stop & Shop parking lot. From the surveillance video, police said they determined Mr. Murphy was the driver of the abandoned vehicle.

“At the time of Murphy’s arrest, officers were unaware he was involved in the car thefts,” Oak Bluffs police wrote in a news release. Oak Bluffs and Edgartown police interviewed Mr. Murphy while he was in custody, police said, and determined he was responsible for stealing the vehicle from Ocean avenue. They also determined he was responsible for the theft of two vehicles stolen in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown on Oct. 16, police said. Both of those vehicles were heavily damaged.

Police said Mr. Murphy was being held at the Dukes County jail on the unrelated matters.
