Hunter orange is showing up around the Island Monday as the two-week shotgun hunting season gets underway.

Hunting hours begin a half hour before sunrise and end one half hour after sunset. Hunting is not permitted on Sundays.

All hunters must wear a minimum of 500 square inches of hunter orange. Those walking on public lands are advised to stay to paths and wear bright clothing.

The shotgun hunting season ends Saturday, Dec. 12. The primitive firearms season runs from Dec. 14 to Dec. 31.

Last year 594 white-tailed deer were harvested in Dukes County during the hunting season. Of those, 337 were taken during shotgun season.
