Rosalie Humphreys Powell will display much of her life’s work in keeping the art and craft of traditional rug hooking alive in an exhibit at the West Tisbury library Dec. 5 to Dec. 31.
Ms. Powell, who traces her Martha’s Vineyard roots back 12 generations, began teaching Islanders how to create intricate hooked rugs in the 1940s, and continues with classes today.
More than two dozen rugs on display cover subjects as diverse as moths, sheep, Santa Claus, flowers, and fruits, as well as traditional patterns and Vineyard themes.
An opening reception and rug hooking demonstration is scheduled for Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. in the library community room.
