The specialty license plate program begun last year by Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is on its way to becoming reality.

Community Services reported this week that it had sold 850 Martha’s Vineyard specialty plates and submitted applications to the Registry of Motor Vehicles this week, after nine months of working on the project. The RMV will process each application and the plates will be produced and shipped out within six to eight months.

The specialty plates will only be available for order through mvlicenseplate.com for another month. Once the application process has been taken over by the RMV, those interested in ordering a plate will have to wait until the plates are available through the RMV website and at designated Massachusetts RMV branches, possibly later this summer.

Community Services announced the news in a press release this week.

People who registered and paid for a plate can expect to receive notification in the mail from the RMV once their plate is available for pickup at their designated branch. The notification could be as early as March or as late as September, since it takes up to eight months to produce the plates.
