Snow, wind and some wet rain makes for a big mess, which is what we got, all in our first big storm of season. Now it is 44 degrees and it is all melting and we are hoping that it does not freeze. Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Autumn Donnelly, who celebrated Jan. 23; Kylie Fauteux, Jan. 24; Davi Butkowsky, Jan. 27; and to Audrey Polleys who celebrates her day Friday, Jan. 29.

So, as I was saying, we survived our first big storm of the season. There was a big garage fire but we were so glad no one was hurt. But a big thanks to the fire personal and EMS units that responded and for their dedication to our towns.

Also we should thank the plow crews who are up all night trying to make the roads safe for us all to travel.

My salvation at home was cooking. I started at 8 a.m. and stopped at 4 p.m. It kept me busy and the two men, Mark Blodgett and Dan Townes, who keep me shoveled and safe through these storms appreciated the banana bread and magic bars. It is a small price to pay for all they do.

Of course to do all this cooking I was among the many who were at the Stop & Shop stocking up. That is when you run into all your friends, and the short trip turns into a long chat time. Mark was there harassing me, and we ran into Madeline Fisher, and we talked for so long that Sue who works at the Edgartown Hardware passed us four times and commented on her last pass that she should have joined in because it must be a good talk.

The storms also make you think of past storms and how different things are now. I did notice a few days later that the hill at Sweetened Water Farm was very used by sledders.

Facebook has lots of posts that send you back. One of them is “When I was young when the streetlights came on it was time to go home” and the other “Who remembers when mom used Wonder Bread bags on your feet to keep them dry.”

My reply to both is yes. If I wasn’t in by dark I was not allowed to go out the next day. And yes I did wear those stupid bags on my feet. My feet still froze but they were dry.

The Pats are not going to the Super Bowl but they gave us a great year. There was a lot of screaming and yelling at the TV but it did not help. So now we have to say, go Broncos.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
